Wooden Twist Shape Stacker — 4 Pillars
Montessori · Wooden toy · Ages 2+
It only goes down if they turn it the right way.
Four wooden pillars stand on a square base, and each one has small pegs sticking out of its sides. Every shape has a notched hole cut to match. To get a piece to the bottom, your child has to turn it until the notch lines up with a peg, slide it down, then turn it again to pass the next one. It is a shape sorter and a little puzzle in one, and it holds a toddler's attention far longer than plain stacking.
How it works
Pick a shape. Look at the notch in its hole and find the pillar it belongs on.
Turn and slide. Rotate it until the notch lines up with the peg, then slide it down.
Twist past the next peg. The pegs sit at different heights and angles, so each piece needs another turn on the way down.
Why the twist makes it better
A puzzle, not just a stack
Plain stackers are finished in a minute. Here every piece is a small problem to solve, so your child keeps going to see if they can get the next one down.
The toy checks the answer
A piece on the wrong pillar, or turned the wrong way, simply will not move. They find the mistake and fix it themselves, which is the idea behind Montessori materials.
Wrist and finger control
Turning a piece while holding it level is real coordination work. It builds the hand control they will later use for buttons, lids and holding a pencil.
Shapes and colours too
Circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and crosses in four colours. Sorting by colour is the easy start before the twisting gets serious.

Questions about this toy
Is the twisting too hard for a two-year-old?
Show them once by turning a piece slowly. Most get the first one down quickly, and the later pegs give them something to work up to.
Can they get the pieces off again?
Yes, the same way: turn and lift past each peg. Taking it apart is half the game for the youngest.
How do I clean it?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry. Do not soak it, because water can swell the wood.
Watch them turn the first piece three times, then grin when it finally drops.
Safety: contains small parts. Not suitable for children under 3 years without adult supervision. Check the pillars and pegs now and then, and stop using the toy if any part cracks or comes loose.
