Questions about this excavator
Is the whole thing metal?
The body and arm are die-cast alloy. The tracks, cab glazing and small detail parts are plastic, as they are on every model at this size.
Can it dig real dirt?
Sand, dry soil and small gravel, yes — that is what it is for. Wet clay will clog the tracks, so hose it down and dry it afterwards.
Does it come with batteries?
Check the pack before a birthday. The remote usually takes AA cells that are not supplied, so it is worth having a set in the drawer.
Is a three-year-old too young for it?
Driving it is easy straight away. Coordinating the arm and bucket takes a while, which is why it stays interesting well past three.
Put a tray of sand on the floor next to it and you will not be needed for a while.
Safety: not suitable for children under 3 years — small parts. Contains a metal body with moving joints and tracks; keep fingers and hair clear of the tracks in motion, and supervise younger children. Battery compartments should be closed by an adult.
