Wooden Busy Board — Latches & Locks
Montessori & fine motor · Ages 3+
Real latches. Real bolts. Nothing pretend about it.
This is the board for the child who keeps going for the cupboard door and the window latch. Every fastening on it is genuine hardware — hinges, a hasp, a sliding bolt, a barrel latch — mounted on a painted town scene, and each one opens a little door onto the picture behind it. They will work out all of them, and then do it again.
What is on the board
Hinged doors
Panels on real hinges over the plane, the boat and the buildings — undo the catch and swing it open.
Several kinds of fastening
A hasp, a sliding bolt, a barrel latch, a hook. Each one works differently, so each is its own puzzle.
Lacing tree
A red cord threaded through eyelets on the tree — the same motion as doing up a shoe.
A town to talk about
Fire station, police station, hospital, roads and traffic lights, printed across the whole board.
Why it works so well
It answers the urge to fiddle
Toddlers want the latches they are told to leave alone. Giving them a board full of the real thing is easier than saying no all day.
Something behind every door
Undoing a catch reveals a picture, so there is a payoff each time rather than just a mechanism to flick.
Genuinely useful skills
Turning a hook, sliding a bolt and threading a lace are the same movements as buttons, zips and shoelaces later on.
Silent and portable
One flat board, nothing to charge, nothing that beeps. Good for a car boot, a waiting room or a long visit.

Questions about this board
Is metal hardware safe for a toddler?
The fittings are screwed to the board rather than loose, and they are the point of the toy. Check them over before each session, keep the lacing cord to supervised play, and put it away when you are not in the room.
Will a three-year-old work them out?
Some straight away, some after being shown. That gap is what keeps them coming back — the hard ones stay interesting for months.
Does it hang on a wall?
It is made to be used flat on the floor or a table. Play with it on a lap or a low table rather than trying to mount it.
Do the screws work loose?
With daily use they can, as with any hardware. Tighten anything that moves, and stop using the board if a fitting cannot be secured.
Hand it over and time how long the room stays quiet. That is the review.
Safety: contains small metal parts and a cord — choking and strangulation hazard. Not suitable for children under 3 years. Adult supervision required at all times. Inspect the fittings before each use and stop using the board if any part is loose, sharp or damaged.
