How to Choose a Rechargeable Lamp for a Pakistani Home

Rechargeable lamps make more sense in Pakistan than in most markets, for the obvious reason: a light that runs on its own battery still works when the power does not. But the specifications are inconsistently reported and the marketing is unhelpful, so it is worth knowing what to look at.

Battery capacity, not claimed runtime

Most listings advertise hours. Ignore them — that figure is almost always measured at the lowest brightness setting, which is not how anyone uses a lamp.

Look for the capacity in mAh instead. As a rough guide, 800mAh will get a small bedside lamp through an evening at moderate brightness; anything you intend to run for a full outage should be considerably higher. Capacity is a physical fact; runtime is a marketing claim.

Warm or cool light

This decides whether a room feels restful or alert, and it is the choice people most often regret.

  • Warm light for bedrooms, living rooms and anywhere you want to wind down. Warm light in the evening interferes least with sleep.
  • Cool light for desks, study areas and kitchens, where you want to stay alert and see detail accurately.

Lamps offering both are worth a small premium if the room does double duty as a study and a bedroom — common in most households here.

Dimming: stepless beats stepped

A lamp with three fixed brightness levels usually has none that are right. Stepless dimming lets you land on the level you actually want, and it is the difference between a lamp you read by and one you switch off because it is uncomfortable. If a listing mentions stepless or infinite dimming, that is a genuine feature rather than marketing.

The Crystal Table Lamp is a reasonable example of the category: stepless dimming, rechargeable, and small enough for a bedside table.

How it charges

Check the connector. USB-C is easier to live with because you almost certainly already have the cable; a proprietary barrel connector becomes a problem the moment it is lost. Also check whether the lamp can run while plugged in — some cannot, which defeats the purpose during a long outage.

Matching the lamp to the room

  • Bedside and study. Dimmable table lamps and book lamps. Warm light, stepless dimming.
  • Hallways, stairs and cupboards. Motion-sensor night lights, usually magnetic, requiring no wiring at all — the easiest upgrade in this list.
  • Living rooms and shelves. Decorative pieces such as lamp balls and glow houses, chosen for atmosphere rather than for seeing by. Do not expect them to light a room.
  • Statement lighting. Wall lamps and light boxes, where the fitting is the point.

One thing worth knowing

Decorative lamps and functional lamps are different purchases, and buying one expecting the other is the usual disappointment. A crystal lamp ball is beautiful and will not let you read. A dimmable desk lamp will let you read and will not transform a room. Most homes want one of each rather than two of either.
