Craft kit · Scissor skills · Ages 3–7

From the first snip to cutting out shapes, one level at a time.

Children want to use scissors long before they can, and it is a skill they will need at school. This kit gives them two pairs of safety scissors, a glue stick and 25 activities to practise on. They start with straight lines, move on to curves and zigzags, and finish by cutting out shapes that they fold and glue into small crafts. Each level is only a little harder than the last, so most pages end in success and they want to try the next one.

Three levels

1

Straight lines. Learn to hold and squeeze the scissors by cutting along straight dashed lines, like the flames behind a rocket.

2

Curves and zigzags. Follow wavy and zigzag paths across the page, like a bee's flight path. The new skill here is turning the paper while they cut.

3

Shapes. Cut around bigger shapes, such as a flower, then fold and glue the pieces into craft projects.

Why it works for little hands

Each level builds on the last

Straight lines are quick to get right. Curves come once they are ready, and a child who finds them hard can stay on a level for as long as they need.

Scissors sized for small hands

The plastic blades are made for paper, and a spring opens them again after each snip, so small hands only have to squeeze. There are two pairs, so you can cut alongside them.

Getting ready to write

Squeezing and releasing scissors strengthens the same small hand muscles a child uses to hold a pencil. Following a line also trains the hand and eye to work together.

Something to show at the end

Many pages end in a craft they cut, folded and glued themselves, and having something to show for it keeps them coming back to the book.

Questions about this kit

Are the scissors safe for a three-year-old?

They are child-safe scissors with plastic blades, designed to cut paper, and a spring opens them after each cut. They are still scissors, so sit with young children while they cut and put the scissors away afterwards.

My child has never used scissors. Where do we start?

Start with Level 1. Straight lines teach the grip and the squeeze. Move on to curves once they can cut a line from start to finish.

How messy is it?

There are paper scraps and a glue stick, but no paint or glitter. Keep a bag nearby for the scraps and tidying up takes a minute.

Can two children share it?

There are two pairs of scissors, so an adult or a brother or sister can cut alongside. There is only one booklet, so if two children want their own activities, get one each.

The first time they cut a line all the way to the end, they will want you to see it.

Safety: contains small parts. Choking hazard, not suitable for children under 3 years. Use the scissors with an adult nearby and store them out of reach after play.
