Mushroom Peg Puzzle — 493 Pieces
Montessori peg puzzle · Ages 3+
Peg by peg, a picture appears.
Pick a card, find the colours and press the little mushroom pegs into the board one at a time until a shark or a dinosaur fills the grid. When playtime is over, the pegs go back in the tray, the board goes on as the lid and the whole set carries away by its handle. 480 pegs, and none of them left on the floor.
How it works
Pick a picture. Choose one of the 10 cards, or skip the cards and make up a design of their own.
Peg it in. Press each mushroom peg into its hole, with fingers or with the tweezers, until the picture is complete.
Pack it away. Tip the pegs back into the tray, put the board on as the lid and carry the case by its handle.
Why it keeps little hands busy
A real workout for small fingers
Pressing a small peg into its hole, or picking it up with tweezers, builds the pinch grip children will later use to hold a pencil.
Colours and patterns, without a lesson
Copying a card means finding the right colour for each spot, row by row. That is colour matching, counting and pattern work, done for fun.
Copy first, then create
The 10 cards give them a picture to follow. Once they have done those, the board becomes a blank grid for their own designs, names and patterns.
Tidying up is built in
The pegs live in the tray and the board closes over them as the lid. One handle and nothing loose, which matters when there are 480 small pieces.

Questions about this puzzle
Will the pegs get lost?
They live in the tray, with the board on top as the lid, so packing away after each session keeps them together. A few may roll under the sofa over time, but with 60 of each colour, losing a handful will not stop a picture.
Is it too fiddly for a three-year-old?
Most three-year-olds start with fingers and simple shapes. The tweezers and the busier cards are the next step, which is why it stays interesting for a few years.
What happens after the 10 cards?
The board is an open grid, so they can make up their own pictures, patterns or even their name. The cards are a starting point, not a limit.
Start with the shark. By the last card, they will be designing their own.
Safety: contains 480 small pegs — choking hazard. Not suitable for children under 3 years. Supervise young children, keep the pegs away from babies and younger siblings, and pack them back into the case after play.
